The story
Mara has built her whole life around routine: freelance editing, long hours in Rora’s bookshop, shelves arranged by feeling instead of by author. She prefers people on paper. Paper doesn’t leave.
Leah has lived a little bit everywhere and never long enough to call anywhere home — until she moves in right across the hall from Mara. They were at university together. They were almost something. And there is one graduation night neither of them has forgotten.
Almost Out Loud follows what happens when two women who have spent years calling it friendship run out of places to hide from what it really is. A story about reconnection, longing and the slow unravelling of two people who never fully said goodbye.

The one who remembers
Mara
Freelance editor who spends her days among the shelves of Rora’s bookshop. Hides behind silence and dry humour, and is far more tender than she lets on. She remembers everything — it’s sort of her problem.
“I don’t hate people. I just prefer them on paper.”
The one who came back
Leah
A publicist who has lived everywhere and stayed nowhere. Playful, bold and impossible to ignore, she talks whenever feelings become too real — and still calls Mara “Alice”.
“Of all the doors in all the wrong cities, mine had to open right across from Wonderland’s.”
The one who notices
Rora
Owner of the bookshop and the person who sees more than she says. She never pushes. She doesn’t have to.
